I got the hat box back down from its perch and reexamined the hat. Aha--it is one hundred percent beaver fur. I am able to "put a lid" on this one! thanks to all who showed interest! mary

Nice! That's worth a fair amount. I winder what's going on in Humansville, MO these days!?

      mareredware,
Very nice! As I stated in my comment, when you first posted this hat, this was a VERY high end and expensive hat in it's day. Most felts, for making hats, were a mixture of rabbit, ermine or beaver fur. So, the 100% beaver fur felt was extremely expensive and evidently worn by someone very distinguished. Great hat!!

This is one of the things about this sight that I find enjoyable! jscott0363, you were right and I did feel that it was a beaver hat when I posted it. Celiene, you were right to question the fact that the hat and the box did not go together. And me, well...I am new enough to this that I have a difficult time questioning those who seem to know better.
Anyway, the questionable posts stick with me and keep me wondering...so this morning I checked again. I knew the hat had more than one id on it. I just posted the Humansville tag as I found it more of interest. I could only post 4 pictures and I wanted my dog to model the hat!! Anyway, I was pleased to find proof that it is indeed a real beaver fur hat!~ And I am sincere in thanking everyone who took interest! Have a nice day! mary

      Mary,
I must say that Buddy certainly looked quite dashing in this hat!!

I trapper beavers as a teenager & the fur has two layers/grades. The guard hairs on the exterior are coarse & used for making artist's brushes etc.. The inner coat is a super soft down & may well be what the hat felt is made from. If so, I can understand the expense.
Of course after the beavers gave me their fur, they thanked me & went home. Home was on the grill ! Great eating & don't taste like chicken !

Hello jscott0363 and blunderbuss2 and thanks for your continued interest. I agree that Buddy looks awesome in hats and he poses so perfectly each time I ask. I have photos of him in hats for every holiday...perhaps that would make a good post some day!
and blunderbuss2, I'm sure you are correct about the felt coming from the inner coat of the animal. I have eaten rabbit and deer, quail and turkey and even wild boar.. But I have not had nor do I think I want to try beaver or opossum or raccoon!
Celiene and kyratango, I appreciate your comments and interest. Yes, I think it may be worth something and I am glad that I took a second look at the hat. I have it in the box perched on top of a hutch for décor and rarely look inside!

Just don't know what you're missing. Tastes like a fine grained beef.
