I usually try to bring more information to the table. I couldn't in this case. The piece is thin walled, covered with texture and opalescent. Other than that, I don't know anything about it. I'm hopeful that I'll get some help from the CW community. Would like to find out what type of glass it is, and where it came from.

Updated from "Spectacular Mystery Opalescent Free Form Glass," to "Volcanic Fireball - 720Glassworks - Votive." One of 4 Fireball versions that 720glassworks.com makes.

    4 1/2" Tall,
    6 1/2" Long,
    3" Wide.

    Thanks for stopping by.

When I saw this, a fish came to mind....especially when I saw the third photo.

      :-))))

I like your view. When I got it from the lady, she thought it looked like, and I agreed, an elephant. Thanks Efesgirl.
    3. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 8 years ago
I see just what you mean about the elephant. Seen from another angle, it does resemble an elephant.

      :-)))

This is one of the most unusual pieces of glass I've ever seen.

A guppy trying to mate with a jellyfish !

Thanks for all the cute comments, but just to clarify, I am hoping that someone out there will have some idea as to what type of glass work this, is and what it might be called. Jellyfish.....lol.

My suggestion of a jelly fish wasn't supposed to be a joke.

Thank you Gillian. As I said, I am looking for ideas as to the type of glass, maker and origin.

      It's absolutely fascinating Dean.
Whether it's been a deliberate piece or an artist playing about doesn't matter. I love the look of it and it shows someone who really knows how to work glass.
Certainly there looks to have been a bit of blowtorching there and perhaps multiple layers of glass in the base to cause the opalescence. The bumps appear to be quite large bits of frit that haven't fully melded to the ground.
I would be good to get a glass blower to look at this and tell you exactly how it was made. My ideas are amateurish at best.
I do know a good thing when I see it however - and this is fantastic.

I'm wondering how something with such delicate lines of glass managed to remain undamaged for so long. It really is fascinating to see.

I think it looks like a flaming ball of...something. I started to say a meteor except that wouldn't be trailing flames! : )

That said, I can also 'see' the elephant, fish, jellyfish and the guppy mating as well (thanks for that unscrubbable image, bb2!)

Could you really plan / design something like this? I have no technical knowledge so I won't be any help there. It seems like a project that started well, went downhill suddenly then got tweaked until it turned out better than the original design. I think it's gorgeous!

I agree with Karen though - you're probably going to need a 'hands-on' person to know how they managed this. Sorry I couldn't add anything new.
