    (175 items)

    Hello everyone.

Have had this for a couple of years now, so time for him to make an entrance.
Judging by other ones I have seen by googling, I do think I have happened to score a real bargain for $60.00, or I hope so at least so I don't look like a total idiot LOL.

The seller's description from memory was "gold pin in a box" or words to that effect!!!

So, this is what I think..... Victorian 1870 or so, unmarked gold, Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire,Pearl and the eyes look Amethyst?
Peasejean has a butterfly brooch that is very similar and with the openwork back as well.
This butterfly itself is very small being about 2cm across and the same long. The whole pin is about 7cm top to bottom.

The fitted box that the pin came in is from A. Saunders London, and 815 George St Sydney. The nearest I can date this at the Sydney address is 1887 - 1927. Could go either way I suppose to being the original box!

Not much else I can say, except I love it....hope you do too! Thanks, Judy

      BUUUG!!! Splendid stick pin!

Wow! Judy! You did very, very well :-)

Love it when the seller doesn't use appropriate description, this give us a better chance to catch the bargain ;-))

    5. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 4 years ago
Thanks Pascale, glad you like him, he is pretty cute!!
I think we deserve a good bargain every once in a while....keeps us keen to look for more then!!

Of course I LOVE him, he fits right in my collection of insects stick pins :-D
    7. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 4 years ago
Hi Pebble, thank you and yes it would be interesting to know......maybe I wouldn't wear it again if it sold for lots lol.
    8. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 4 years ago
Pascale, he is the only one I have apart from the fly joined lace pins, so there will not be any more insects from me I'm afraid....well for the moment anyway lol! I do so much LOVE all of yours!!!

      Hi,
Stones and pearls are well set (bead setting which requires a lot of skill and handwork). The stone is inserted and the gravers or burins are used to lift and push a tiny bit of the metal into and over the edge of the stone. Then a beading tool, which is simply a steel shaft with a concave dimple cut into the tip, is pushed onto the bit of metal, rounding and smoothing it, pushing it firmly onto the stone, and creating a "bead". There were people here angry with me for mentioning pearls were not supposed to be just glued in, but set like your pearls. Wishful thinking is not a method of judgement.
The box is completely another issue. It does NOT belong to the pin. It is too long and too narrow for the pin and besides, there are depressions in the lining to accommodate a completely different piece of jewelry. But that`s not too important, the pin is antique and of excellent quality.

Hello Ivan, thank you, really appreciate your knowledge. I remember you telling me before about how the pearls were set and I do remember to check that on jewellery that I come across now. Can't understand why people would be angry to hear the correct way of setting the pearls.
Thanks about the box too, that's good and as you say not important...so the pin can just stay in it to keep it protected. Thank you very much for taking the time to help with this pin.

Ivan, you have such a great knowledge in jewellery making techniques, you can be trust about glued pearls ;-)
( I remember well this particular post! )

Thank you for kind words. You cannot imagine how difficult it is to set pearls with beaded setting technique because they are so brittle. My comments are always benevolent, whenever you see pearls set like this you can tell for sure it`s old and excellently made jewelry. The first image shows every stone and pearl perfectly set, four beaded prongs for each stone to keep them safely in place. Superb craftsmanship.
      Cheers
