I was at the thrift store and saw on the ground a woman's portrait that looked a bit old.

I picked it up, set it on a table upright, and slid my thumb along a dark portion gently to prove to myself it was charcoal.

It tested as charcoal, so I gave it a closer inspection and noticed the signature I cannot be sure of, "Buey"?, and the date-- 1893.

It is charcoal on paper, then put on a canvas backing. It's severely damaged, and I may cut it, chop the frame down, and put it back on the smaller frame.

I'm wondering who the person is? Myself and another person at the check out believe her to be British.

Does anyone know about the artist, too?

For $1, I was quite pleased with my thrift-store find.

Looks to be a photograph that was retouched/ embellished.

These large (16 X 20, usually) photos/ enlargements loose a lot of details and were enhanced with charcoal and paints to bring out the details.

They were very popular in the late 19th century.

Interesting idea, but I do not see a photograph underneath.
