    Hello fellow collectors!!!!

This is a very early 1800's leather soft top stagecoach trunk from my collection. It has a wood base covered in thick leather. There is an access door inside the lid that was designed to stuff your laundry in. When you filled this compartment with laundry, or other articles of clothing, it created a nice soft seat for you to sit on while waiting for your stagecoach to arrive.

This one has lots of beautiful brass tack designs on all sides and even has the original owners initials "T.M.K." on one end. The lock and hasp were all hand wrought in a blacksmith shop back then. The brass keyhole cover is broken, but I'll overlook that.

The original handles and securing straps are still intact. The leather securing straps have been shortened by someone previously, probably due to dry rot.

I worked with this trunk for quite a while to restore the leather. The result wasn't bad. Though there is a place on the front of the soft top that had separated from the trunk, it's still in pretty nice condition to be 200 years old. Most of these soft top trunks have deteriorated and are no longer around. So, the soft top trunks that are left today are considered extremely rare. I'm thrilled to have one in my collection!

I'll post the interior in the next post. Thanks for stopping in to have a look!!

      greendog,
Thanks friend!! It was in pretty rough condition when I got it. Went thru 16 oz of leather rejuvenator to get it looking this good. I wish all my trunks could talk.
trunkman posted one similar a few years ago, only his is quite bit nicer than this one.

      Kyra,
Thank you!! I was a bit fearful that I wouldn't be able successful at bringing this one back to life again. So happy with the final results. The leather softened and came back to shape better than I had expected.

      trunkamn,
Thanks so very much for the compliment!! I've tried many leather restoring products and I always end up going back to Leather Rejuvenator. It's a long and tedious process, if you follow the steps, but it does the best job of all. I always finish with an application of mink oil and a good buffing. Many thanks!!!
