    Hello fellow collectors!!!!

I recently came across this wonderful apothecary doctor's case from the 19th century. It's covered in herringbone pattern canvas with leather binding and a leather securing belt. This one is from the 1820-1840 period. It's still in really great condition, a bit stained, but 100% intact. I dare not attempt to clean it for fear of damaging it in any way. The key is missing, but I don't really mind that.

This would have been carried by a early 19th century doctor on his horse and buggy when making house calls. It still retains some initials on top, but I cannot quite make them out.

The interior is in really great condition and there is still indication of medicine bottles that were once kept inside. This little case is small and only measures 10" long, 6" tall and 5 1/2" wide.

I can only imagine the doctor that once owned this and the types of medications that were once kept in this little chest. If this little chest could only speak to us, the stories it could tell.

Update: Thanks to our CW friend trunkman, we now know that this is from the 1820 to 1840 period. Thank you trunkman!!!

Thanks for stopping to have a look!

    Scott

Small, very small! I wonder what the doctor carried in it...
      Another fantastic trunk, Scott :-D

      Wow Kyra!!
That was extremely FAST!!! Thank you. It is a very small chest. I've wondered myself what types of medicines that were carried in this. Probably medications that we're unfamiliar with in today's world.

Tiny bottles of medicine drops, probably ...
    6. jscott0363 jscott0363, 8 years ago
      Kyra,
I'm guessing medicine drops, powders and possibly pills of some type.

Wow! another great little trunk/box Scotty, I use a 2/1 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and blue dawn dish soap in a spray bottle and soft bristle brush or a damp cloth works well, remember a man once said, " we have nothing to fear but fear itself" very cool little box.

      Drill,
Thanks!! It is a neat little chest, if I must say so myself. I thought it was unusual and something I'd never seen before.

      trunkman or Drill,
Any ideas on how old this one would be? I've been unsuccessful at finding anything in regards to a little chest like this. I'd appreciate any input form anyone.
    17. trunkman trunkman, 8 years ago
I would think as a guess between 1820 to 1840.... if it was a full sized trunk going by material and style I would think around then... specifically the studded top leather going down past the lip of the base... typical of that time period.

      Oroy,
Thanks buddy!! I was pretty fascinated with this myself and that's the primary reason I bought it. Knew I'd probably never come across another one like it.
    19. jscott0363 jscott0363, 8 years ago
      Thank you trunkman!
I had a hunch that it must be from the early to mid 1800's, but wasn't completely sure. The studded dust cover around the lip really made me think that. Thanks very much for your help! I really love the older items like this. They just fascinate me to no end!!

Love this! You have an incredible collection. I have an old leather covered apothecary box. It's made a little differently than this. It has the dividers for all of the bottles.
