This Beswick 1069 vase has the palm trees on both sides. The palm trees have their shape in relief so you can feel the design, and are not just painted on. The ones with the palm trees on both sides are amazing, a beautiful design. I have these vases on top of my kitchen cabinets !~

The term relief is from the Latin verb relevo, to raise.

The vase has a width of over 10 inches, just over 8 inches high and also the amazing depth of 8 inches.

If you want to learn more on this series please view my previous beswick posts.

Beswick made great wares. This shape is fantastic Phil. Love your photos (of course!).

The colors are stunning, as well as the shape. Love the wavy rim, that reinforces the idea of a blue/green sea on the background. Congrats my friend.

Thank you for the simple explanation of "relief". So everyday speak to those who know. Until reading this I passed by anything that had that word in it because I didn't know what it actually was.
      I'm so "relieved". :);)

Excuse me Phil, but what the hell are you talking about OGF ?
    11. OneGoodFind OneGoodFind, 8 years ago
Excuse me too Phil, but BB2, I did not know what relief meant on art pieces, be it jewelry, vases, ...
      Yep I'm an idiot. :)
    12. fleafinder fleafinder, 8 years ago
      so what does it mean?
    13. OneGoodFind OneGoodFind, 8 years ago
The palm trees have their shape in relief so you can feel the design, and are not just painted on.
That is what he said in the description of the post.

‘Pictorial relief’ is a surface in 3D ‘pictorial space’. It is perceived in single flat pictures and clearly has nothing to do with binocular stereopsis but with the interpretation of image structure in terms of relations in the external world. Ways to perform geometrical measurements in pictorial space are presented and a number of empirical results are reviewed. Applications to the theory of optical instruments aiding human vision are discussed.

ure not that bad i dont really understand it either
    15. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 8 years ago
Actually, I was carving relief before I knew what it was. Not the 1st thing you learn. When the excess material is removed from an image & that image stands "proud", that is relief. To be honest, it's only been in the last few yrs. that I understood. You aren't alone, Grasshopper. LOL !!

Sa WHA, Fleafinder ? Now I'm confused !

Ya'll are too sweet but I think we are messing up Phils' post. :<
      I feel so guilty.

A beautiful vase Phil, and great photos too!
    19. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 8 years ago
OGF, we learn from each other & I fail to see anything out of order. Do you Phil ?
    20. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Humm, "relief" is originally a french word, applied to decorative arts.
Could be translated by raised or dimensional :-)
Bb2, you always make me smile :-))

Phil, another outstanding pic of stunning piece! XOXO

Thanks OneGoodFind and also Oroyoroyisthatyourhorse for the nice comments.

Thanks again OneGoodFind for keeping up with the meaning of relief, I have to say I know nothing of what fleabit is talking about either as it does not relate to relief in the current meaning, especially to the vase.
    24. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 8 years ago
Again for OneGoodFind, here is a sculptural meaning where you might understand more as to what the relief word has in the sculptural point of view to objects:
" Relief is a sculptural technique where the sculpted elements remain attached to a solid background of the same material. The term relief is from the Latin verb relevo, to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane."
    25. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 8 years ago
fleafinder I appreciate your comment but I am not talking of pictorial relief BUT I am talking of an objects relief which is totally different !~
    26. fleafinder fleafinder, 8 years ago
hey good day to you phil, apologies to have confused it with the geographical term for relief. Always happy to learn something new here:)

i can sleep with relief now..zzzzz..
