Hello CW friends!
I'm working on a small Victorian era canvas covered suitcase and this lovely grooming set came with it. Since these are not my area of expertise, I'm hoping someone can tell me more about this set. The set is not original to the suitcase, as there are no designated holders for each item. Though, I'm guessing this set is from that same era. Not sure if this set is American or European. Perhaps someone can help me with that.
The handles are all wood and the brushes all have boars hair bristles. The mirror is beveled glass and really needs to be re-silvered. I do not know if the emblems on each piece are sterling silver or just a cheap metal. But they are all beautiful and still in quite nice condition after a quick cleaning.
Thanks for stopping to have a look!
Scott

How wonderful Scott.....what a really great set! I am guessing this would be a man's set do you think?
Looks like quite the fancy set. Sadly I don't know much about the wooden sets.
Mike,
Thanks! Nothing like finding the complete set 100% intact!

My guess is English. or Scottish. So great to see all together, agreed! I love these vanity items. I have one full set of green bakelite or celluloid that I LOVE and another smaller faux alligator set yet to post....will dig that out for you. Here's the green set.

valentino,
Thank you so very much!! I just checked out your green set. The set and case are awesome!!! Thanks for the love and for stopping by. Many many thanks to you!
Thanks Scott - my baby sister has dibs on mine, so I put a "provenance message" in it for her.
In my 1920's bldg. - basement storage - there were some plain 1930's-40's?? trunks. Very plain, I imagine there had been many stored down there but over the years the interesting ones were "acquired" by new owners here. I was offered one of the plain black - large! - by the mgr., but seriously, had no room for it in my tiny apt., - even as a couch "coffee table" - no space. PLUS, only current owners can use the huge basement storage now. (I'm a renter - for 18 yrs here!) I hope they shoved it back in one of the dungeons. Maybe someday I'll have a bigger place.
valentino,
That's really neat! By all means try and have them save the trunk if possible. I hate to see a great piece of history rot away.
Anytime I decide to let a trunk leave my collection, I always give the new owner pictures of before and after, as well as the approximate history of the trunk. I only let one go if I know it'll be in a home where the owner can truly appreciate the beauty and history of the trunk. Don't want to see one mistreated.
Thanks very much for the loves

Kyra,
Thanks so very much for the love and for always stopping by. Very kindly appreciated!!!!
Scott - I remember seeing at least 6 of the large plain black ones when they were renovating our basement a few years ago. This bldg. is right across from the dry-docked 1967 Queen Mary ship....so there was some "romantic rumors" that they came directly from the ship...but. I know they were older than the 1960's. When our building did basement renovations they turned off all electricity down there so none of us renters could hunt and shop. First the owners took a lot - including original Redwood doors, windows, original rattan furniture from the rooftop solarium, anything interesting from the storage rooms which had been locked for years. I wish they would have had a big garage sale. LOL. Oh well, I still live here and know how important my historic bldg. is.
I can only image the wonderful trunks that came out of the Queen Mary.
Thanks very much for the loves
