I am completely out of my league here: I think it is carved jade and it might be a Chinese amulet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for looking:)

This is fairly new. It's carved stone - or a lesser quality jade. I am not an expert on jade but I LOVE my Chinatown here in Los Angeles and see these there and at gemfaire. You can use it as a armoire skeleton key decoration (I have), ceiling fan pull (ditto) or a fob on a cell phone, decorating a zipper pull. Or, take it apart and use it for a pendant.

Thanks so much for your help, Mary. I also thought that it was rather new based on the cord, but I had no idea what it was supposed to be used for. I think I will put it on one of my cabinets - it will look just great. Thanks again, Mary!

Thank you so much for your comments, paris1925 and lentilka11. I know nothing about this piece but I saw it at a church bazaar and liked it. I am very happy to see that I am not the only one who seems to like it or finds it worth looking at it:)

paris1925 - it isn't that old. I saw a lot of these in China, 2007 and here in LA Chinatown - same silk knot and carnelian bead. Your's might have been much nicer. Another thing to look for to help date is the quality of the cord and knotting on older items is much finer, tighter, thinner cord than this and the carving would be smaller too, more delicate.

Thanks so much for all of your comments. I will keep it, fleafinder:) And Mary, even though I would have preferred it to be older, I think you are correct. But because I paid $1 at a church bazaar (That's less than 75 cents US) I am totally fine with it. It will look great on the cabinet!

Thank you for the link. Ours do look similar. I have another one I will post and see if we get any additional hits. I do know that mine was purchased long before 2007, not to say that they have been making for some time before.
