Found this on the side of the road. Looks to be in good structural condition, but the leather is cracked/broken and missing. Some of the latches has fallen off. Not sure if I should leave it as is, clean it up, or attempt a restoration. Any information on this trunk would help so I can find out what it should look like in good condition, and where to find replacement parts.

Hello, that's a nice road side find! It's a canvas covered wooden trunk made sometime around 1900 to about 1915 give or take a few years. I have several old trunk catalogs which show similar trunks from 1900 to 1920. Many people choose to remove the canvas and refinish the wood body of the trunk, which can look great if it's done well. The interior can also be refinished or relined. On a trunk of this style which is not rare, I don't believe it hurts the value but increases it since it can be a nice piece to use in your home. But that's something you would need to decide for yourself. The original style latches can be found and I have a variety of them if you are interested in replacing them. You can contact me at Marvin@ThisOldTrunk.com if you would like more information about parts, keys, or more historical information including old catalog pictures. I can also show you pictures of similar trunks that have been refinished and lined if you'd like to see some.
