Calling all trunk experts or leather connoisseurs - can someone please advise on how to best approach the treatment of leather on this trunk? As i started reading online recommendations, they run from "just apply leather conditioner" to "don't touch, only preservation professional should do it". Somewhere in between, there are suggestions to soften it with water, clean it with leather soap, stabilize leather, apply conditioner but only a certain kind and not more not less than needed. This is the first trunk i'm trying to revive, nothing major, not yet, just trying to clean it up, preserve the leather and move it to my work room. The leather is dry, warped in one place, ripped in the front, flaking in one or two areas. Basically, it's not falling apart completely but definitely needs help. Thank you for all suggestions!!

We found this trunk/chest at an estate sale. It's brass studded and leather bound with brass handles. The trunks leather covering is in bad shape with rips that i'm afraid cannot be repaired. The leather overall is very dry and may continue deteriorating. I need to save it quickly!

The lock is marked "Patent RV" with a crown. My research showed that this mark is related to the lock manufacturer and is not related to or helpful to the trunk's ID. There are no other marks on the trunk identifying anything about it. My guesstimate would be late 1800's. I'll appreciate any info about what it is, how old, any anything else that would be helpful. Thank you.

I believe that is an English made, Camphor wood chest (not a traveling trunk). I would guess the mid 1800's as approximate age.

AnnaB, very nice find. I also think it's an English made camphor wood trunk from the mid 1800's. The mark on the lock is V R which is for Victoria Regina (Latin), the mark used on items made during the reign of Queen Victoria, which was a long time, 1837 to 1901.
