This is the complete necklace in its full glory. When I bought this necklace I asked the person who was selling, if he knew some history about it. This is what he told me. His wife's grandfather was in the navy, which makes sense to me, he probably would have visited Japan on his travels. It had been passed down to his wife and it had been in the family for many years. He didn't know anything else.
Looking at the necklace it is a swag necklace with a barrel clasp, which would put it at around the 1900s, on the other hand it could have been specially made, we shall never know. The necklace was being sold as metal, I tested it and it is at least 14ct, the overall weight is a hefty 65 grams, the necklace itself is 18 grams. I have a problem with the hooks that go into the links which are unsafe, I have had them come out of the necklace, which of course I don't want because I would love to wear it. I would like any suggestions on how to make the panels safe.

I had same idea than Bonnie for using silicon stoppers :-)
Waiting to get them you may use scotch tape bits to "close" the hooks, but don't leave in place for too long, the glue may be difficult to remove...

I also put a piece of a cut-up rubber band on the back of earrings. I use a wide band and cut a square and poke a hole in the middle with a needle.

I have to say I which I had this in my collection it is truly amazing piece. When you said it was being sold as metal. Was it being sold as being made of gold or just as base metal? If not being sold as gold I assume you didn't pay a crazy price for it? I would have to say that its older than 1900 . Shakudo due to the quality of work I would say 1870-80 and I believe barrel clasp were use before 1900. Are the Shakudo signed?

Hi grendel, what I was told by the person who was selling it, was that he had taken the Shakudo to a jewellers but not the necklace which I thought was strange. To be honest I wasn't all that bothered about the necklace, I was more interested in the Shakudo. The seller was selling the necklace as non gold, when I received it I did test, it tested for at least 14ct but not 18ct. Unfortunately the panels aren't signed, it's interesting that you think they were made between 1870-80 is that because of the quality of the Shakudo, I would be most interested to know. Yes I was dating it on the quality of the Shakudo. A lot of Shakudo artist who made items for swords had to find new jobs at the that time so they started making jewelry for the western market. Since there was a big crazy for anything oriental. Wow only 2 bidders he must have really listed wrong or started the price to high. I can't believe I missed it. I am always looking for missed id items. I must ask what did you get it for since there was only 2 bidders if you don't mind?
I think most Shakudo that was made for export ware was made circa 1870 - 1890. The Samuri as a class were banned in 1871 which co-incided with the western interest in Asian, particularly Japanese, aesthetics.
I think it's likely the round discs where made in Japan & then mounted & added to the necklace in Europe or possibly the UK.
In the olden days, when I collected Victorian jewels, Shakudo was 'the thing' for me. It was so expensive though, that I wasn't able to afford any until I'd already moved onto Arts & Crafts. At enormous expense (for me) I purchased fan earrings & a similar brooch at Hatton Markets.
It's a shame I didn't actually spend the sum (400 pounds) on Arts & Crafts because that would have appreciated more during the period. However, I did eventually swap the earrings for my Guild of Handicrafts butterfly so I'm not complaining.
I still have a little soft spot for Shakudo and do still have a piece in my collection; frogs in a divan chair. It's part of a buckle so I'll probably have it mounted into a necklace & sell it on some day.
That main boat plaque is really lovely; really fabulous quality. Each plaque is a little piece of art in its own right.
Hi Jewel1900, I know Shakudo is extremely expensive, I was very lucky with this one, I watched it for days. The people who sold the necklace didn't realize it was Shakudo, It wasn't in their write up. Therefore, I think it really pays to look and be patient, there was only on other bidder, which surprised me. I been looking at other pieces of Shakudo, I now realize I have a exquisite piece. Hi grendel, I can't say on here, but it was a true bargain, the starting price was quite high but not outrageously for the piece, infact very low. I was lucky I knew a little bit about Shakudo, most people wouldn't have a clue. It was on eBay UK.
eBay UK explains why I didn't see it. I general don't buy a lot from over seas. I might now have to start looking more. You have a very nice piece and looking at prices of others that are not as nice. You did Very well.
