Correct your title. The notes are not from 1890.
48091 is the zip-code for Warren, Mi. Zip-codes didn't exist in 1890. They came out in the 1960s. Your tags are from 2001.

Lovely old chest there and ~ welcome ~

Beautiful, and welcome to CW! SpiritBear, I hardly believe the intention was to say that the actual notes were from 1890, but rather the chest. Quite obvious.

The chest is possibly not from 1890 either. Rather, someone's parents immigrated in 1890 and someone was born the same year. That is what the notes appear to say.

      CW does not permit appraisals.

I just mean that if you have an old piece of furniture with a (albeit recent) note saying "Your great grand parents came from Prussia in 1890 and this was part of their luggage", why not start with the assumption that that's actually true rather than the opposite? Sorry Eric, but as Gillian pointed out appraisals is not the scope of CW.

As for the age, the screws in the hinges suggest mid 1800's at the earliest. Prior to that there would have been rivets or nails instead. The hand planed boards and hand forged lock do make it look older than 1900's. 1890 definitely and perhaps a bit older than that.

OlofZ, I would agree the chest is earlier than 1890, but the post title says that the notes are from 1890.

Yes, that's true. A little comma would go a long way: chest with notes, from 1890 ????
