These came with a different Fort Apache set but I like to use these with my Fort Apache Carry-All. The carry-all came with the Alamo defenders but these cavalry figures are more the traditional style when one thinks of cavalry figures.
As can be seen the horsed figures are sallying forth from the fort along with the figures on foot.
US Cavalry soldiers were trained to fight on foot and ride into battle. It is a bit hard to hit anything riding on a horse.

John Wayne used to shoot peeps all the time while riding his horse, lol. What a great playset, fortapache, you must really enjoy playing with it. :)
