    This was a lucky eBay find. Not too many of these shields from the 1926-27 NJ Highway renumbering exist, to my knowledge. I have only seen a handful of these in collections via image searches.

    These cast aluminum shields measure only 16.5" in diameter, and were typically posted close to the ground, sometimes just a foot or two above it.

    NJ State Route 27 presently extends from Newark to Princeton. Before the 1950s, when this sign was in use, Route 27 ran all the way south to Trenton.
