This was handed down to my mother something like 40 years ago by an old woman who had had it in her family for many years. I think that her father had been a sailor and picked it up on one of his trips around (and here I am guessing) the turn of the century. She passed it to us because she dropped it and it broke into many pieces. My father had a go at repairing it, but of course it is essentially ruined. I can no longer ask my parents, they are both deceased. We came across this very recently while clearing the house.
It looks Chinese or Japanese, and the figures and decorations are embossed. There is a mark on the base which translates as a name, the maker.
We are just very interested to know if anyone has any idea of what it might be, or its history/age etc.

Thank you so much for replying, it is gratifying that you took the trouble.
Most interesting to learn something of its origins. If it were in good condition, I guess that it could be worth something. A great shame that it was smashed.
