Stig Lindberg designed the Pungo or "pouch" vase in 1953.

It was bought in Bondi Junction about five years ago and is still a favourite.

I thought it was such an elegant form.
It continues to challenge my eye.

I'm not at all familiar with that maker. The piece is wonderfully modern

What an intimate, elegant, shape. It would probably work well as a pitcher. I'm intrigued.
It'll remain in my thoughts, thanks for posting it.

Hi Jona! I was wondering about your comment? I know about two Pugnos, Giovanni and Franca who were decorators for Gustavsberg, especially on Stig's painted pieces. Do you think that there's a relationship between tGiovanni and this vase?
    5. jona, 13 years ago
i found a few phots of plates tallrik he decorated, and a mug with 2 dowels for the handle which i think one of them made. a lovely conversation ensued in finnish knowing it was gustavsberg signature.

yes, i think the vase, made in 1953, was a collaboration with G. Pugno and possibly his design. i haven't seen a bottom signature.

Hi Jona! I had not known about it. Pugno is an Italian word meaning 'fist' and the Swedish word Pungo means 'pouch'. When you look at the vase there is a similarity to both a fist and a pouch. Perhaps there was a pun involved there all the while?
The marks at the bottom are: 'GUSTAVSBERG', an anchor and 'SWEDEN' impressed. When I bought the vase there was also a part gold sticker which had the same info plus the studio "hand" and Carrara/Stig Lindberg.

it remains a mystery but what if it was giovanni pugno's first year on the job and shared his idea with lindberg.
oh, such interesting pieces from sweden.

i found out giovanni pugno was born 17/10/1945, it is therefore impossible he was involved with 'pungo' vase.
franka and giovanni painted nice 'modern' plates and vases with stig later.

Hi Jona. Thanks for the detail. The names I've got so far on Stig's decorators are Giovanni and Franca Pugno, Eduard Berchtold and Marianne Preissler. I've been collecting copies of their signatures on pieces from the net. Do you know how Franca and Giovanni were related (married/brother/sister)? It's not the only case of Italians being in Scanndinavia either ?.... I'm thinking about Marcolin glass.

Hi vetraio50! I just uploaded a blog post on Stig Lindbergs Terma-dishes from 1955 recently, and discovered a nice similarity to his Pungo-works from the same period that gets obvious when looking at the handle of the pan:
      http://designqvist.at/2012/12/these-pots-are-made-for-cooking-vol-3/
...just wanted to let you know this as I find it very interesting myself to see that his artworks and his tableware sprung from one and the same thought- and work process!

      I'm checking that out.
      Alors, maintenant, je comprends!
      You're right.
"I was staring at it and it came to me."
      Inversion.
      And now a vase.

In one of my books they say it is the best of his designs.
I need a big black one!
