I tried to find out more about this box but wasn't too successful. What I think is that "greenstone" is also called New Zealand jade. I have found many pieces of jewelry but no boxes. I think it might be a tourist item.

Hi all - All of these replies are from 6 years ago so I don't know if the original poster is still interested in comments on the box. Yes, tourist item but quite expensive. I visited Penny's Souvenirs in some part of beautiful New Zealand in 1989 and had to have this box. The sticker shows a price of $295.00 (obviously NZ $s). I think that converted to approx. $400. I REALLY loved, and still love, this item.
