My first of the year !!!

Hopped off the 440 and headed into a regular haunt to see this vase with an English tea cup and saucer on top. Gingerly got rid of the tat and saw that the vase was sound. As soon as I saw it I knew what it was because I have two other pieces by 'Margo'.

"30% off today" said the salesman. He asked me if I liked 'this type of thing'. But I did not bite ..... I was not prepared to fill him in on what I knew.

Hettie Margaret Lewers (1908-1978) was Margo. Her maiden name was Hettie Margaret Ernestine Plate. She was born on April 23, 1908 at Mosman, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. A trained typist she worked as a secretary and then she joined the staff of the Daily Telegraph as a commercial artist and worked at a Sydney poker-work firm.

But Margo was ambitious and set up her own studio printing textiles and made hand painted pottery. After spending some time studying textile design, painting and drawing with John Farleigh in London, she and her new husband Gerald Lewers returned to Sydney in 1935.

In Sydney in 1935 Margo established the famous Notanda Gallery, an interior-decorating shop in fashionable Rowe Street Sydney and continued to design hand-printed fabrics and pottery. This pot probably comes from that period.

    The shop closed in 1939.

But Margo Lewers' career continued to develop. She became one of the most influential figures in the Sydney art scene. The Lewers family home on the Emu Plains outside Sydney became a museum and this pottery is part of the permanent collection.

    Margo's Pottery no. 46
    H: 16.5 cm

    c. 1935

It joins my two others .... nos. 11 and 20.

Vetraio50 do you have more knowledge on this pottery collection? I believe I have No43
    40. vetraio50 vetraio50, 3 years ago
Hi CHIEF6FT. Yes I do know a fair amount about the pottery. I’d be interested to see it if you post it. No.43 is just a design number ... not a unique piece they were done in production numbers. How high I am not sure.
