I am baffled! I have had a necklace and matching earrings and never thought twice about them until I started learning about the history of jewelry. First thing I noticed was that the earrings were screw back with an interesting earring back, then I realized both pieces were set in 14k gold. Each orange stone is approx. 1/2 inch long. When I brought the items to my local jeweler in hopes he had more information, he told me the orange "beads" were amber!

I own screw back earrings, but the connecting piece looks nothing like these do.

If you can help me identify these items I would appreciate it immensely. There are no makers marks, hallmarks, nothing to tell me anything about when, where and how this pieces came to be. I would appreciate any help, or leads on these beautiful items.

    Thank you again!
    Debbie

Very pretty! Unfortunately, it's not possible enlarge your photos on this site. :-((( When I click on them, they become smaller.

Will send later. Meanwhile can you take a peak at my other listing. I haven't a clue who M. Kaye is, and nobody that I have asked, does either.... I've seen the pieces on ebay, but when I ask who M. kaye is, they haven't any idea....

Hi Debbie - I did do some research on that and got a big fat zero.
    4. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 7 years ago
I posted links to other jewelry by M.Kaye, but nobody seems to know who that is....

      you lucky gal... very nice!!

I'm confused about the earrings: you call them screw back type but they look like pierced earrings on the photo, with a screw-on nut. Btw, this style of nut often indicates an earlier piece, first part of the 20th century.
    7. davyd286, 7 years ago
Screw back earrings do not require pierced ears: they sort of clip on like a small vise.
    8. dmmtsm1, 7 years ago
My bad - you are right. the earring back screwed on to the post - they are pierced. I have diamond studs that also have to be screwed on... I am now attaching a close up photo of the earrings.

thank you for correcting me... if you have advice on how i can learn about the quality of the amber I would be most grateful!

Wish there was a makers mark.
But looks to be Butterscotch Baltic Amber

Poked on every gold connecting piece. No marks... thank you for your help tho!

To be fair, you are not wrong, those backs are called screw backs for studs or post earrings and they are still being sold (e.g., http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-925-Sterling-Silver-Pin-5mm-Pearl-Cup-Screw-back-Stud-Earring-Post-Setting/361427246936?_trksid=p2047675.c100623.m-1&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D40839%26meid%3D820fc5da00e14fa787dd525189f921ea%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D222311114730).
But in the collectibles world, we came to firmly associate the term with vintage non-pierced earrings. Yours look very well made, nice find.
    15. dmmtsm1, 7 years ago
They look unlike any other backs I have seen. Have you seen this type anywhere else? They also look hand made. I do thank you for the link. The ones online have a more rounded end, mine are more triangular.

Yes, it's a nice find, but I would love to know more about the necklace/earring set. I can't find ANYTHING similar, with the gold spacers, anywhere online... Any thoughts davyd286, or for that matter, anyone else??

And as long as you are a good detective - thoughts on the M. Kaye Bracelet??

      Thanks again!

This type of earrings for piereced ears we're used in victorian time and the pierecedpart can still be bought as said before.
Amber beads with silver like this can be seen in several parts of the world like the middleeast and parts of Africa. But they tend to be more elaborate and not always pure amber but copal and resin phenolic.
I think your set might be russian or from a neighbouring easteuropean country. I don't think it's antique but vintage. Here is another necklace comparable to yours even if not exactly the same:

Very interesting link! My necklace has either 14 or 18k links. I need to read more about copal and resin phenolic. I just did, and don't really understand what that means. There is no clasp, and I have searched each gold link and connector - but no markings. even on the earrings, which i thought would have some sort of mark, somewhere... thank you for sending me the link tho... any more pictures with gold, i would love to see - but THANK YOU for going the extra mile...

Great, are you sure it's solid gold, it could be someother metall coated with a thin layer of gold? Anyway a great necklace. Try and Google "russian chain amber bead necklace" or just "amber chain beadnecklace" (without the "). Try and see what comes up. I have seen one necklace like yours before in a ebay add it also said russian, can't remember that it said gold though. I think amber has often been matched with silver to let the amber show more.

Here is another discussion on amber/copal. I haven't valued the links so you need to read them with a critical eye. Search the net for more information :) good luck. I have some old beads that I will post later today on CW :)

Your set is NOT Russian imho. As for the copal/amber, please see the post I've put up hoping you find it helpful:

I gave a link to just one example of the earring backs being sold today but there are many more and you may be able to find the exact match.
