I was looking at old photo albums with a friend one time, which he took out of this dresser. I commented that I thought the blue antiquing was pretty (not sure what I was thinking). Several years back, said friend passed and he left me this dresser. I've used this since then in my bedroom - and over the holiday, decided I would try to strip a drawer to find out what's underneath. I was surprised to find this pretty tiger oak pattern. I would never part with this piece as it has much sentimental value, but I'm curious if anyone can tell me anything about the origins of it, correct terminology, time period it might have been made, etc. Also, keywords of things I can watch for in the future - as I think I'd like to add another similar piece if I can ever find one.

Oh this is so beautiful!! You have done an excellent job on re-doing this yourself. I'm sure your friend is pleased ;) Lovely story and gave me those feel good chills. Thanks for posting that and welcome to CW!! I'm sure since you have redone this you and seen every inch of it. Normally, there is something either inside of a drawer, under a drawer on the bottom or backside but it may have gotten painted over in the first place. And in order to have uncovered that you would have had to gently remove paint around there where it may have been. It's a very familiar style to me but I'm drawing a blank...not unusual for me these days ;) I will keep this beauty in mind and get back to you when and if I recall. Someone else may have an answer for you tho too. Stick around for lots of fun and learning.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome to this site! I used citrisrip. I guess it's to be less toxic than traditional type strippers. You can get it anywhere - Home Depot, lowes, amazon. It took two coats - I put the stripper on with a paint brush and covered it with Saran Wrap. Waited an hour or so and scraped it off. Very little paint remained - I did another coat of the stripper - covered it again and then an hour later scraped it again - and almost all of the paint and Varnish was gone. Can't say it works for everything but it sure worked for this! And this is the first piece of furniture I have ever attempted to restore!
I also used a lot of steel wool and even a scour pad. Then washed it down with warm water and an old rag - and then sanded. This stripper seems to be water based. Not sure if any of this is a no-no in furniture restoration but it worked for me. I'm happy with the result!
