Very strange Artwork, can't read artist signature

I got this piece of art from a friend. I helped her move out of her house in Annandale, VA. She told me this artist is famous but she didn't know his or her name, I can't figure out the signature. I took it to a local art gallery and the owner wasn't familiar with it. It is 24x24. Does anyone know anything about this piece? Thank you
