Early 1950's copper enamel by Matisse. The style is called Nefertiti. It was a very popular design and also offered in white, black, pink, red, blue, and plain copper. There was also a necklace and earrings to complete the parure, which...I don't have.

Beautifully made, not one chip in 60 years! Signed Matisse in script, before 1954.

I love this kind of jewelry because of the simple but elegant design. Too bad I have not found anything like this in the stores I usually go to. Your post reminded me to keep my eyes open:)

Here's some history on the companies Renoir and Matisse:

Thank you Judy. They were popular in the 50's-60's. Taste changed in the 70's and I picked up earrings for .25 in the 80's. Most of my collecting was under $10 even for high-end NYC designer Rebajes. But since the mid 90's I've concentrated on completing sets. I don't mind paying more now. Back in the 80's I was a poor artist.

Thank you Kyra - the quality is excellent. I have bracelets that are chipped or the copper is scratched. Generally earrings and necklaces are in good shape. A clear gloss coating was perfected and the backs of enameled items have a clear enamel to balance the weight so the enamel doesn't pop off...plus, prevents "green skin", which can happen as a reaction to copper.

Thank you Gudrun - it's out there. I'm sure you will find some. The 50's-60's costume jewelry is often classic or tailored in design isn't it?

Your copper collection is awesome! Lucky you to buy all the great stuff for cheap in 1980s!
How this could ever go out of fashion...

Thank you lentilka - I love my copper and felt it was time to document it. Collecting what you love at the right time when no one else loves it - well you see this result. My first gift of 18 sets of .25 earrings and the Rebajes mask brooch in 1980 drove me to find the matching items. There are some amazing items out there that I can't afford. I love seeing them! Thank you for loving these too.
