This enigmatic Phänomen Genre decor appears in several places in the glass literature. So far, all shapes it has been found on fall within the black hole in the documented paper patterns between 1901 and 1903, where many of the records have been lost. Ground colors appear to include blue opal, camelienrot, yellow, and hellgrün. Several other phänomen decors in blue opal spreading appear in this same time frame. Alternating silver fanned leaves and brown-red flower buds repeat four times around the body of the vase, and the ground shades from blue opal to nearly clear at the base. Elongated silver iridescent spots dot the background. I love the Hofstötter-esque shape of this one. It stands about 9.5" tall. The ground and polished pontil contains the proper Loetz Austria engraved signature that was used only up until about 1903.

***update*** - thanks to the observant eye of Deb Fitzsimmons, we now know the production number for this shape - II-2/219. A vase in this shape with Max Schwarz silver overlay was listed in an online auction, and Schwarz inscribed the production number on the pieces he decorated. 2/219 it is - thanks, Deb!

A wonderful example out of the many still 'unknown' Loetz Gre's, this one is most often made on pink glass, your blue vase is the first I see in this colour. Very fine.
