In 1955, the city of New York introduced a new street sign for the borough Manhattan to replace the previous sign first introduced in 1915. As shown above is an example from my collection. With visibility as a primary concern, the new sign had a black on yellow color scheme. Each letter and/or number present was 6 inches versus the 4 1/2 inch font on the previous porcelain "humpback sign." The intersecting street, on the bottom of the new variation than on the top of the old sign, had 3 1/2 inch letters/numbers versus the previous 1 1/2 inch font.
