Hello CW friends and fellow collectors!!

This is one of my estate sale finds today. It's a Liberty Chimes 4 bar dinner chime manufactured and designed in 1927 by John Bruno Kohler and Otto Leibich. These were used in railroad dinner cars. They were used to summon passengers that dinner is served.

This one is numbered 81 and has a really nice tone to it. In fact, I read where that the Liberty Chimes company, who also produced organ chimes, is where the famous NBC chime came from.

Thanks for stopping, looking and loving!!

    Scott

      Thanks Karenoke!!
Lot of folks passed this up today, but I knew right away what it was and it's approximate value. So, I snatched it up as quickly as I could:)

lol Kurt!! I've been annoying my wife all evening by playing that three note NBC chime on this piece. The dog goes nuts and my wife's about to throw me outside:)

      Thanks Kerry!!
I've wanted one for quite some time now, but wasn't willing to pay the ridiculous asking prices I've seen. My patience paid off finally!!

Great item especially as it is train related. Trains and train travel were very classy in the long ago. The food on a train was good and not like airplane food.

Wonderful stuff. And to have that photograph too! Love the shoes on the ladies, hats as well.

I have a friend who owns an ex-Santa Fe diner that he runs charters with. He always calls us for dinner with a set of chimes. The passengers get a kick out of it.

      Scott, this is just beautiful!!!
Great that you knew what is was!! I did not know that such a thing existed....I am impressed!!!

      fortapache,
Thanks!! Other than train cases, this is the only piece of railroad memorabilia that I own. I've been on hundreds of planes in my life and the meals were about the equivalent of fast food. Never been on a train, let alone having a meal on a train.

      Gillian,
Thank you!! That photo is courtesy of wikipedia, but I thought it worked well as to show everyone how this chime was used.

      pajrr,
How cool that would be to own a train. That's really neat that your friend uses a chime to summon everyone to dinner. I'd love to be able to have dinner on a train and relive that era for one evening! Thanks so very much!

      Judy,
Thank you so very much!! I had seen one years ago and was fascinated by it, so I researched it and found out what it was. That's when I knew I had to have one. The only problem was the prices that sellers were asking for one of these ($$$). I was lucky enough to bring this one home for a bit over $20.00 USD.

This is a great piece Scotty!! I've seen brass whistles, Lanterns of different types etc. in abundance. Nothing like this before:))

Thanks vintagelamp! I wanted everyone to see how this was actually used.

      Judy,
I knew exactly what it was when I saw it. The sales person even gave me an extra 10% off as it was the last day of the estate sale.

      Thanks Roddy!
I don't normally collect items such as this, but for the price I wasn't gong to turn it down. It was pretty dirty when I got it and it took some serious cleaning, but well worth the price I paid.

Very cool piece Scott, and I love seeing it in action in your last pic! I recently went to a military function for my son-in-law, and at dinner time a Sergeant came around ringing something very similar to this . I never knew that outside of the military these things we used. Excellent find :-)

This set really does look sharp jscott -- your work cleaning it up was well worth it and well done! :-) My former housemate had a similar set (needing restoration, sitting in a closet) that I need to snag one of these days, so's I'll then have a set of my own... ;-) ;-) :-) :-)
Another aside -- besides their common usage onboard trains and for the NBC chime, similar sets can also find usage in certain kinds of churches, rung at certain points within their services for "liturgical purposes".
    37. jscott0363 jscott0363, 5 years ago
Thanks AnythingObscure!! I've always thought this was a neat little item. I wasn't aware that these were used in churches, but I can definitely see where it'd work well in service for liturgical purposes.
