A bag of beads from about 10 years ago - lovely 4 sided oblong black graduated beads. Originally each bead was knotted on cotton string that disintegrated but thankfully saved. Maybe 1920's? I think these are handcrafted beads because there are no mold seams and all different. I believe they are jet which could place them to 1860's-1920's era.

Thank you Bonnie for your link about jet and solving the mystery :-)

I was able to string the lovely beads to 34". Because they were knotted on cotton I imagine they weren't expensive originally. Any comments or information is welcome. Excuse glare - the beads are a beautiful black. Largest bead is 20mm and smallest is 10mm.

I think it's beautiful! Do the beads feel warm to the touch?

First of all thank you Aura for fast and first love.

Bonnie - thank you, I read your link. Yes, my strand is warm. Also your link comments that jet was popular from 1860's until 1920's. Some of the beads are not perfect, which makes me think they were handcrafted. If they were glass - wouldn't every bead be close to similar? My beads could have been a tourist strand.

I would think the beads, if coming from the same production batch, would be more or less similar each other.

What a beautiful necklace! I can feel its warmth though your pictures!

Bonnie - they are really similar, some minor blemishes. :-)

Bijou - thank you - it's a timeless item. I have these beads now but someone will enjoy them later because they were thrown away.

Thank you friends for your loves of old beads: Kevin, Caper, Zilla, Ken.

Kerry - I found these beads in Missouri :-)

I am glad the beads ended in your hands - they found a good home!

Thank you Lentilka - you're right. I restrung them and now someone will value them more. Broken beads in bags don't get very much respect :-)

Oh wow, I agree...thank you Bonnie for that great info on 'Jet" I have often wondered the difference. Had to read it fast but at least I can go back to read it again. I actually have beads like this as well. Now, question on this. I have an old NA double strand necklace with turquoise etc...I believe they used jet also, right? I will post that later so I can possibly get some insight on those beads.

Now, I have a question for you ms val...(thanks for letting me use your space here to send that message to Bonnie ;)

I am hoping you're on and can lend your expertise to my rockabilly/betty paige questions on handbags of that era...it's driving me more nuts than I really am...I think! haha

I'll post the purses and would really appreciate your insight on them.

      Thanks kiddo! xoxo

I look forward to seeing the handbags.

I don't think NA items will have jet. It's probably onyx. I am very bummed out when I got this bag o'beads there were 2 long beautiful pyramid beads which somehow (in the hoarder apt. where I live) were lost. Boo Hoo! Maybe when I move they will be found behind something....LOL

Phil - I have so much stuff....the pause here was about 10 minutes LOL - it took me that long to find them both. Yes - they would look great together :-)
