    E. & H.T. Anthony, one of America’s earliest camera makers, built a variety of great equipment. Cameras by the company are among my favorites. Anthony is best known for its exotically strange designs but occasionally their cameras got very conservative.

The Clifton Camera is one of Anthony’s later field view models made in six sizes from 5" x 7” to 14" x 17”. Although more conventionally designed in comparison to earlier Anthony models such as the Phantom and Novellete (which are posted here on Show & Tell), the Clifton is compact, lightweight and surprisingly versatile.

To satisfy pros' creative needs, a nice array of features were built in such as reversing back, double-swing front and rear standards, and front or rear focusing. Unlocking the lens board for tilting is done by squeezing a pair of brass knobs built into the front standard.

The 5 x 8 inch format model shown here is constructed of finely polished mahogany and cherry woods, brass fittings and red leather bellows. A Fowler & Slater “The Special” rapid rectilinear lens is mounted. In 1903, this particular camera sold for $17 (approximately $439 in year 2016 currency).

As a note, this camera was sold years ago as part of an interesting trade for - ironically - another Anthony. (Go figure!)

Had I lived back then and had I been fortunate enough, this would have been what I would have chosen.

Thanks, PCC! Yes ... $17 would have been a good deal for this camera in 1903.
