These are pictures of my father, the 1st is 1926/7, 2nd is 1944/5, he's the Sailor, his 3 brothers, and mother, on the levee, on The Old River, near Tracy, Calif., 3rd is 1972, my father's leaning on 17yo. me, stick in mouth, 67 Rambler American, behind us, standing in front of our home in Concord, Calif., 4th 1985, his 60th Birthday, at my sister's cabin in Lake Tahoe, Calif.
My father died in April 1989, just a month before my 2nd son was born.
I still miss him today! ;^(

My father, to me lived a life that you only read about, or see in a movie. He grew up hard, a fisherman's 2nd son of 4, was a strict father, but a loving Dad, to 4 daughters, and a name sake, son, was married to my mother the youngest of 4 sisters, until his death, and she never gave up on him, until she died on Christmas Eve, 2012!

My father was one of those people that could do almost anything, a Commercial Fisherman until 1953, an Engineman, Gunner, and Boatswain's Mate, in the Navy WWII, a Machinist, and Inventor, for a Machine Shop in Minnesota 1946-49, he could work on any part of an automobile, and tune it by ear, better than a scope, in Calif. he was a Union Meat Cutter, and owned a Butcher Shop 1953-61, got his Boat Operators License and became a Union Tow Boat Operator, on the coast and inland waters from Monterey to Crescent City Calif. in 1962-1978, when he had a stroke that paralyzed his right side, that forced him to retire. He fought to get better, and by 1986, most people couldn't tell that he had a stroke, but in May of 1988 he had a massive brainstem stroke, that should have killed him, but somehow he hung on, my mother by his side, communicating with eye blinks, for yes, and no, and slowly after 11 months, some thumb movement, but when we asked his Doctor if there was a chance to get a computer and keyboard, to see if he could type words, or a question out, He said in my fathers room at Veterans Hospital, "Those movements are Involuntary", I looked at my Father's face, his normal red skin, went white, eyes shut, and he was dead in less than a week. I cried, knowing that at that moment, My Father had given up on life, on those thoughtless words, from that doctor! It was hard to talk about him, without crying, for a long time after, and today still brings a tear. ;^(

The doctor’s comments were thoughtless and uncaring. He should have known better.
The love he received from you and others in his time of illness was certainly understood by him and gave him comfort.
