I have an idea of the identity of this officer, from looking at old Civil War photos in books.
It may be Capt. (and later Colonel) John Ashworth of the 38th North Carolina.
That is not for certain, but it is certain that the two ambrotypes here are the same officer!
This CS captain left us two ambrotypes of his image, and
also one ambrotype of a younger girl, along with a daguerreotype of an older girl. Further the ambro of him standing with his sword is not a normal sized ambro. It(CA 1862) resides in a beat up thermo-plastic
case built for four 1/6th plate images. Someone filed the border
between two of them so this long ambro of the good captain could
be placed there. It would be a 1/3rd size plate, if there were such a thing.
Also another 1/6th plate ambro of him exists, residing in it's
own case. It has suffered a fracture of the glass of it's image but
can be set to be a good image. All found together, many years ago,
in Warren County, North Carolina at a local estate sale..
In 2001 I had my near death illness, and I was told not to expect to live more than a very short time, so
I had my Civil War images sold, but within a few weeks I was given better news, that I might live for some time yet.
So I began to collect Civil War hard images, and CDV images again, and this time I knew more what to buy and how much
to spend. I still enjoy collecting here in 2019. Good luck to all you collectors!

There may be a possible ID for the Captain of infantry. This was located at an
estate sale in N.C. and so I started looking in Clarke's books which show many old
likenesses of NC Civil War CS officers. Few of them had long hair like this
Captain, but I found one, Capt. and later Col. John Ashworth of the 38th
NC regiment. Take a look yourself, if you have access to Clarke's books, they
have been reproduced. There are no good original knownlikenesses of Col. Ashworth in uniform, but as some CW image experts have told me...I might be right about this possible ID.
