Railroads have (and Amtrak and commuter lines still do) offer day trip and weekend packages to promote ridership during off peak times and weekends. Back in 1923 the PRR offered several day trips from Philadelphia. One could visit NYC, Atlantic City, Washington DC for discount rates. While promotional fares today are a good deal, I wish the 1923 prices still applied!

Amtrak still has day trips around here. I should try some out.
