I recently purchased this ring as I am drawn to the arts and crafts movement (or any piece of vintage/antique jewelry). It has a double shank and is unmarked. All signs point to it being gold and I did purchase it as gold. I think the opal is a triplet but I have not seen one before with a white backing? I was wondering if anyone could help identify the artist. It looks similar to some of the Rhoda Wager rings but I do not know much about Wager's work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi fellow enamel lover! Welcome to CW.

I saw your ring when it was for sale. An unusual place for find an Australian Arts & Crafts piece but it just goes to show you can find treasure in the most unlikely places.

Here's what I can tell you about it.

It's unlikely to be by either of the Wagers. Here's a thread where her work is discussed a bit more -

Jewellery in the Arts & Crafts style was popular in Australia right up until the 1940's & particularly during the depression. Many commercial retailers made & sold Arts & Crafts jewellery, both high & low end. One of Australia's biggest jewellery retailer, Prouds, made their own range.

Rhoda also had a many apprentices who went on to work for retailers or set up their own studios. That's why you find a lot of jewels, particularly rings, that look like Wager but aren't quite.

Solid gold is unusual, most Australian Arts & Craft pieces are in silver.

I also have an opal ring that's white on the bottom. I think it's a solid opal, however, my knowledge of stones is limited. Kiwipaul knows a lot more about opals than I do.

      Hope that helps.

      Thanks TassieDevil!

      Hi Jewels1900,
Thanks so much for your detailed response. It definitely is helpful! I purchased the ring because I thought it was beautiful and did not know anything about Rhoda Wager. It is interesting how buying a new piece of jewelry can open you up to a whole new field to learn about that you did not know about before.
