I've always loved these l a r g e barrel tops by Secor. The hardware is so ornate and, on this model, they tended to use more of it than seems necessary. Having just completed a restoration on nearly the exact same trunk, when I saw this one at a flea market, covered in paint (as you can see in the first photo) I had to have it, and had a plan for having my way with it. I removed all the hardware. I removed all the slats. I stripped the interior of a flimsy paper lining. And then, I did what any man would have done, seeing the Secor in its raw state. I threw it into the back of my car and took it to my favorite sandblaster!, (along with a bucket-full of that extravagant hardware). Once he had blasted it all, it was back to my shop to drill/wire wheel those metal surfaces to a shine, and then seal it all up with some multi-coats of tung oil. The REAL fun was just starting though. As I started to piece together the various compartments, I decided to adorn them with silk, satin and shiny tack head nails and also came up with a design that has no real meaning, but looked good at the time. I must say, for such an elegant lady, she certainly is robust in not only her weight, but also in her footprint!
It has a wonderful industrial look to it Randall.The Dark interior really sets off the brass accents.
