Brander back chairs originated in Scotland in the late 18th century usually with 4 back rods evenly spaced. I was astonished to find this under 1 worn coat of paint (not original) for 5 dollars at my local flea market.
Most chairs of this age in Canada seem to have been rarely discovered in the 70s . The narrowing of the back posts just above the seat is said to be more common in Scottish trained chair makers and I would guess this originated in Nova Scotia or possibly New Brunswick.
Donald Webster's "English Canadian Furniture of the Georgian Period" illustrates several of this type, but the addition of 4 extra uprights and Ebony inlay makes this unique so far.
Unfortunately provenance is unknown so far being dropped off at the Flea market with the contents of an old shed by the owner of a Summer Cottage
leaving the Island after the summer season.
