This piece really had some years of neglect but the owner wanted its character brought back. Unfortunately, the staining proved too deep so I suggested to the owner that I faux paint the appearance of a leather top.
What was done: the entire desk was stripped, stained and finished. A couple of the drawers had some edging that was sheared off. I painted striping in a dark contrasting color to detract away from the edges to give them a more squared appearance. For the top, I faux painted the appearance of a brown leather top using a base coat of one color, with another color applied on top. This was then followed by a scalloped stencil in gold along the edge.
The customer kept touching the top and couldn't believe it was a painted and not real. I advised them to have a piece of tempered glass cut for the top and set on. Thin bumpers to protect the painted surface.
