This is a picture of my mother in 2004, in the Silk Wedding Shawl that was given to her when she married my father in 1946, by his mother. The tradition of passing down the Wedding Shawl from mother to oldest daughter, is from my Norwegian heritage on my fathers side. I don't know if it's a family tradition, or a Norwegian tradition, but it was changed, because my father's mother, only had sons, so the wife of the first son, to get married was given the shawl, continue passing down the Wedding Shawl.
Here is a passage from a family journal, that my great aunt Ada Jean wrote in 1964, talking about her mother, the Shawl and the Tradition:
This is transcribed from Ada's Journal:...I wonder where those things she treasured for so long, can be now? There was the gleaming folds of her Grandmother's wedding shawl. Julie wore it too, and handed down to Nora, and Mama gave it to our sister Constance after our older sister Katie, died. When Connie died, her son William gave it to his wife, Maurine, and maybe they will respect it for what it is, and what it means, but I would have liked for a little while, to love its age, and look at it now and then when I felt like dreaming of Nora, and Connie, and Julie, and Johanna, and whatever women creatures had it before them.
The Shawl now belongs to my oldest sister's daughter, and it continues...
The 3rd picture is my father's mother Connie in 1918, and the 4th picture is Connie's mother Nora at age 8, in 1883, just before she left Norway, to meet up with her mother Julie, who was already in Starbuck, Minn.
If anyone knows of this Tradition, or information about the Wedding Shawl, please help! :^)

Thanks roddyq, and you're welcome, yes she was! :^) I started searching our family history, in the 1990's when my sons were needing it for school and got hooked. Met a lot of new found relatives since then, and sent the shawl back to Minnesota, in 2004 for a family reunion, there, that I couldn't attend, but it was a big hit!
My niece only has sons too, so it will go to one of their brides! to continue...

I missed our family reunion as I was working at the time and at this time work was very scarce and with 2 babies to feed this was top priority. My mother did get me a copy of her side of the family and some photos:)
That's too bad roddyq, but pictures help, just remember to put names and dates with them. At the reunion with the Wedding Shawl, the cousin that sent the shawl to, took pictures of everyone who wanted one, with the shawl on, and we have almost 30, there that never would have been able to see or know of the shawl, and now have it for their family history! :^)
I haven't been to a large family reunion since the 1970's, and that was for my mothers side, even though I missed the one for my father's, mothers side of the family, I was able to get pictures and names of most of the relatives there, because of the Shawl. :^D

This is a great post billretirecoll how your mother's wedding shawl has touched so many hearts and will continue to in your family's generations to come:) I am fortunate and much grateful to my mother for writing all my relatives names on our family reunion photos for me to match the faces with the names in the book. Scottish on her side and Irish on my father's side.
That's really nice to have Roddy, it helps in the future, when people that knew the faces, have gone.
We have so many old photographs, that we really don't know who the people are, because they have no names, or dates, and all our relatives that were born before 1935, are gone, and with them the older generations that they knew. It's a sad thing! Just faces, and places in a box.

Thanks Judy, my great aunt had a way with words, I shed a tear a few times reading the Family Journal that she wrote. It's in story form, as she saw, and the stories of our past, that she heard, of our family.
As she wrote: "Papa named me for the famous singer Ada Jones, and also for the woman who came in to assist at the time of my birth...For thirteen years I was Ada Hilma, and then added one more name Jean...I was the seventh child, born on the banks of the Mad River, Warren Creek, California, March 28, 1909. Mama said I was a miserable baby..." and her story begins, and ends around the death of her husband in Sheridon, Wyoming, 1963.
The Journal is 57 double spaced type-written pages, it's hard to put down, as you read, you feel her ups and downs, and then read to find out what happens next in her life. Some times I wish a movie could be made of it! :^)
