I found this button while I was metal detecting in the Limpopo district (old Northern Transvaal) in South Africa, between the towns of Louis Trichardt and Musina. The eagles head is facing left. I know there were some American Irish soldiers during the Anglo Boer War (AOB) fighting as volunteers for the Boers, but there was also some Americans siding with the Brits. I would really appreciate some information on this button as American buttons in South Africa is extremely rare. I found various other objects in the vascinity (mauser casings .303 casings from the late 1800s and early 1900s) Any information on this button would be greatly appreciated.
Very nice button! There's probably more in the same area from what I've see on you tube. I was trying to learn about the metal detector I have and the two guys were finding a lot in the same area. They were here in the states and would not disclose their area at all...Keeping them all to themselves. Keep looking!
I just detected the same one in my town in Ohio. Have you identified it yet?
Can you read the letters on the back?
I have only found that it is a general service button, in use since 1902 to present, but ours has lined background.
Ok, the one you and I found is an Army, general service great seal, lined field, 1902-1935.
I found one today. The eagle is looking left. Looks like it says Mass on the back.
I was out metal detecting today in northern Utah and found one like the one pictured. On the back I can read 'Union Works' and 'N.Y.'. There is a short word or letters in front of N.Y. but I can't make them out. I found it on an old logging skid trail which would have been used in the late 1800's, early 1900's. When I was a kid (1950's) we had a couple old neighbors that had served in WWI and they worked and hunted in the area I found it.
Just today, I found this button while metal detecting in Granite, OR. It was about 5" deep. The front is identical, except for a lined background, and on the back I could make out what appears to be "SUPERIOR QUALITY". The metal loop looks the same, except about half the size. The button is 7/8", or 22 mm, in diameter.
Hi, my 7yo daughter found one almost exactly the same as this on Whitstable beach today (Kent, England) this time made by Firmin of London. Did you manage to get more info? As she is keen to learn all about it.
