Hopefuly someone here can give me a clue as to what I have here!??
it is 24" long and approx.2.5" wide, ALL solid steel and NO moving parts.
I believe that the heavy head on end of handle is meant to be struck with a heavy hammer or mallet and the tool pulled up or pushed down as it is advanced and struck repeatedly???
Recently found at a flea market and has no markings on tool to help.
I am a 35+ year journeyman tool maker and I have no idea about this one!
I am guessing it cuts sheet steel or opens something, I thought maybe a drum de-header type of tool, but really no idea!! YOU????

Using that thing as you describe seems logical but it would be a bear of a job, especially on the thickness of metal it appears to be designed for. Triple-jaw snips work well on thin stock but levering that tool up each time through heavy sheet metal looks like WORK! :-) Unless it fits on some kind of power hammer(?)
I wonder if it could be for cutting something less sturdy than sheet metal, maybe roofing material or somesuch???
Never thought of that. Maybe asbestos shingles?
It appears to act like a chisel that you pry. The beveled cutting edge and relatively wide gap between the support bars would seem to make it difficult to cut anything that is flexible because the material would curl along the split edge and jam up.
ok, for weight support, I filled up a 55 gallon drum with water and tried to use my tool here to remove the top, it did not go well at all!
I can assure you it is NOT a drum de-header!!
SO, I could still use some input here for solving this mystery tools intended usage!??
still unsolved folks! maybe we can get some new ideas soon?? :)
The cog grippers make me think a harness makers shear.
I was thinking along the lines of a vintage emergency responders tool, sorta like pre jaws of life. Something along those lines...

TubeAmp that makes sense because a clean cut wasn't needed but the thickness of cut limits it to thinner material.

I think your can opener description, is pretty close to the function of your tool, and more. What i see is a tool that is used to rip, slit, and or cut metal, using the blade as the cutter of course, and the 1/2 round knurled end as the fulcrum point for leverage. EXAMPLE:... If you drive the tool into the roof of a vehicle, and you work it up and down, using a feeding motion to cut s hole, to extricate a trapped passenger. Could also be used to drive into a lock or hasp, to cut or snap thru it. I did not find your exact tool, but found a looks very similar one made by Paratech. If you open the link below, and read the purpose of their "Open Claw Cutting Tool", it looks like a later version of your tool to me."imo of course"
