Here's another telco underground cable warning sign to go with the one I posted yesterday, also representing *the rest* of my 'underground cable warning sign' collection. ;-) Pictured with and without camera flash, this one measures 12" x 18" and has a vertical format. It was recovered, like my other, from a ditch alongside a country road -- but in more recent years and in AR instead of IL. This one, actually, is likely somewhat older than my IL one.
Its most interesting feature is the remains of an 'update decal' long ago added to the sign to alter its original legend -- going from 'CALL ENTERPRISE-9000 BELL TELEPHONE SYSTEM' to 'TOLL FREE 1-800-482-8998 SOUTHWESTERN BELL TELEPHONE'. The background of this decal has long since faded away to nothing revealing the original lettering beneath it -- but -- the decal letters themselves still survive and are readable atop the old text.
Also interesting to note is that the decal was obviously sized and intended to be applied to horizontal-format warning signs and in fact 'wraps around' to the back of this sign on either side. There are other old (but I guess not *quite* as old?) horizontal-format buried cable warning signs in the area near where this one was found which also have the exact same decal attached.
