These machines are amazing, they are very rare and the sound is something you would not expect from an acoustic 78 rpm lateral cut record machine. They were made in the 1930's to be the best, and they were, some think they are ugly, but they grow on you. The horn is huge with a 23 inch bell made entirely of papier mache. The reproducer , I have two, an Expert two spring and the 4 spring model, I think they both sound much the same, maybe a bit better with the four spring. If you would like to hear one play I have uploaded videos to YouTube.

The EMG you have is a Mark IX not a Mark IV. I have the identical machine and acquired it some 20 years ago when I was stationed in the forces in England back in 1984. Mine has a Garrard electric motor that has settings to set up to the American current 120/60 cycles. It plays much better than any Victor or other machine.

Well after all these years! I remember Pete Petersen; as I also attempted to buy that Mark IX whilst he was in England; I just missed out! Regards; enjoy those incredible English machines

      John Astin,

I remember you too! I acquired the machine in Harrogate, what a small world! If possible the owner of this website, can you email my email address to John Astin. It would be nice to correspond with him after all these years.
