I posted this one about two months ago, not quite done with it yet but pretty close, thought I would show you how its going, sorry for the pictures, they are inside. This trunk is the biggest one I've done so far, at 38 inches long, 32 inches at the peak and 22 1/2 inches deep, its big. Cleaned and sanded the wood, used minwax antique oil finish on the natural wood, it almost looks like a cherry stain, but its not. I cleaned all the metal with a nylon wheel brush and drill, just took off the loose rust, did not clean to bare metal and applied Rust-oleum rust reformer with a brush, it turned it a very dark almost black color, I like the way it looks, almost original looking and not painted, finished off the hardware with silver rub n buff. the lock is nickel plate over brass, hope you like it, greendog.

So you are telling me my trunk could look like this!?!?? Carefully strip the paints off (brown and gold) and then cut away the leather to expose hardwood?

This is the third time I've come back today and admired this job, this is incredible

Well Stefanie, I'am not saying you should strip off the leather, just saying in my opinion it would look better in black and silver, trunks with original leather in this condition are hard to come by, this is a personal choice you have to make. P.S. thank you very much for the comment on my trunk.

For instance, this trunk was done in clear finish, but it looks like cherry, greendog.
