Today's find at a monthly antiques fair that I frequent - an unusual late Victorian vase featuring an applied salamander. Made from clear glass with a stylised "peacock tail" pattern & an iridescent finish, the salamander being pale, yellow - green uranium glass. The vase measures 21 cm tall, around 12.5 cm across the irregular, scissor - cut top rim, & 9 cm across the base, which has a polished out pontil mark.
Bohemian or English? At this point I'm leaning ever so slightly towards an English origin...the scissored top rim is reminiscent of a documented design by John Walsh Walsh - "Gloxinia". The moulded peacock pattern was also used by Walsh Walsh, & I think - Stuart & Sons. I could be totally wrong, however. Not often do I make a purchase within a minute of entering a fair, but for this piece, an exception had to be made. Whoever made it, it is something special.

      J. Schreiber & Neffen also made a peacock pattern.
