My friend saved this from the trash today and gave it to me. it's very large - over 12 inches across. Shows a Mexican Indian guy chasing after his burro with his whip in hand with a black background. Stamped twice on the back with 'MEXICO'.
where's the category for mexico?

Is this ceramic? I think this was made by a well known artist...I have to go check that out and will be back to tell you what I found. I hope I'm right on this. It's all in the face of the man that distinguishes the artist. And it was found in the trash! wow.

So far I didn't see what I was referring to and got interrupted, so I have to run but I am more than sure if you search this site you may find the likeness there. I was only able to get half way through the first page of ceramics and even though I didn't find what I was actually looking for, there are some very similar descriptions and even items painted on black like yours. I love that site and it's a great reference tool for me. Sorry ho2, gotta run!
I just couldn't stop...and actually I was wrong about that...maybe. Maybe you can check to see if this artist did any work on the 'black ware'. Looks like the black ware is more valuable tho so I guess I made a good mistake on this one to your favor ;)

AI-12: Mexican vintage pottery and ceramics, a Tlaquepaque plate with an incredibly fine Mexican rural scene, attributed to the great Balbino Lucano (this based on the face of the Mexican paisano pictured in the scene), Tonala or Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, c. 1920-30's. The artwork is especially detailed and crisp, and the scene is wonderful and very endearing. This is great Mexican vintage fine/folk art and a collector's dream. Condition is excellent. i have quite a few other pieces which are similar. Mexican pottery, for the most part was not signed by the artist, but is known for the region where they were made. this is one of those pieces. it's very collectable, but almost never associated w/ a particular artist.
That's very true. And I remember even passing up pieces that were signed...(as I roll my eyes) It's just something I thought of when I saw your guy there. I love this stuff now, even though I fell that site may just be the only place that gets that kind of return, don't you think?
But then again...look for the ARIAS pieces then we're in business!
what are the arias pieces? there are several sites and they all get that much and more. check out Eric Berg's Early California Antiques site. he gets the top dollar for this kind of thing.
by the way, this is known as black tlaquepaque, not black ware. that's a whole different type of pottery.

this tripod plate and some other really great items were cleaned out of a house where an artist died not too far from my house in east oakland. i'll post some of the other items soon.
now i know who arias is! i've seen his work before. 50s/60s pressed into a mold for slightly 3-d images. nice stuff!
