This neat little device is a mechanical letter opener. You placed one end of an envelope in the opener, pulled the lever, and it shaved off about 1/32 of an inch of the edge. Just enough to open it up. It works beautifully and I keep it on my desk and use it as intended to this very day. I've never found any information on either this item or the company that manufactured it. However, I'd guess that this was made sometime in the mid-to-late 1930's.
