I have a vintage trunk that I'm curious about. It looks to be a good shape as hardware and handles are intact. I'm curious about the leather embossed covering. Was that significant in any way when they where made? And what would you put as an approximate date of manufacturing?

The black berry pattern is embossed tin not leather, I'd say around late 1880's to late 1890's give or take a bit. greendog

Is this a more mass produced one? Or is there any value in it? This is a piece I'm looking to buy from a friend and I don't want to over pay for it? I've always wanted one but most are in such bad shape.

This is what I call a common style of trunk, you see a lot of them, they were made by dozens of trunk makers, and most had no makers label, it does have a cool lock on it.
Trunks were all made by hand, but were still mass produced by dozens if not hundreds of trunk makers, in the U.S. and Europe. Thousands of american made trunks were sent to Europe, for immigrant's to buy and they returned to america, many people think that because there great grandparents came from Scotland or Germany or where ever, and the trunk came with them, it must be foreign made, when most of the time, it was made in good old USA. I think all trunks have some value, some much more than others, trunks in this class, I've paid from 20 to 100 dollars, I've paid more for other trunks depending on condition, completeness of interior or rareness of the trunk. greendog

I just bought one over the weekend. What is the size of yours?
      Does your have any markings?
Mine has 1/2" casters and stamped 32" Daisy on the bottom
