In the past I have drooled over this design, posted here by PhilDMorris in several variants. This one is less ornate than some of Phil's due to a lack of gilding, or what I take to be gilding. However I do I like this version and I love the green peeping out at the top.
Last week I visited a local antique shop, in spite of never having found any glass to my liking there. First I found a good sized Ruckl vase and then this, which was unpriced. I lost the battle with myself and took them both downstairs....... However the proprietor did give me a price I liked on it!
The Beswick factory was in Stoke on Trent in the north of Staffordshire, a county in the English Midlands. I was born in the south of Staffordshire and grew up with this style of pottery as my mother was fond of it. Of course back then I thought it was so passé!

There is a lot of Beswick pottery about in Australia...I've seen quite a few variations on this palm tree design...in wall pocket vases as well. Usually on a burgundy or maroon ground...this deep blue is uncommon, I think.
PhilDMorris said the same about Canada. I suppose that back in the day these were two big trading partners given that Brits are not renowned for foreign language skills ! I've also seen a pale blue but I do like the cobalt.
The deep blue is fantastic-- really sets off the palm!

Be careful-- it is dangerous going down the art pottery path.
You will find many pieces just as beautiful as art glass. While I do love much of the pottery, I have become so used to your WELZ postings; withdrawal may be difficult!

I'm with you Peggy, Phil's piece really sparked a wish to find one of these. I am so pleased you found the blue one, I think it is the most appealing.
Beswick made such great pieces and this is a beauty!
Not as much gilding but still looks in good shape and the palm tree and cobalt seem to be the main draw to these vases. The lack of gilding may make this one a bit more different, and unusual esp not to see the gilding on the base. The shape # 1071 is fairly rare and a lot were purchased from upscale jewellery stores back in the day, so they made some good pottery wedding presents so I have been told by people who got theirs on their wedding. The fact that more were sent out to canada or aussie countries makes good sense since we were colonies of the british empire, where the u.s. were definitely not, So not that much of this pottery came over to the u.s. When I bought my first collection of cobalt blue, it was harder since there was no internet, but I was able to go to a lot of antique trade shows travelling looking to sell books in several Canadian provences who got a lot of Beswick in the day. I was proud to get the complete collection when there was no internet in the early 90's. When the price guide first came out these were going for catalog price 65L u.k., 175 Canadian, and 110 u.s. in gloss, whereas the dull matt version was less. Since price guides were rare, there were deals to be had. This is the only shape which had a sqaure base so it is rare. I have my new collection over the kitchen cabinets where they look fantastic. The most rare colours you ever see are Yellow gloss (had 1) and British Racing Green gloss, which I have never seen! You have yourself a very beautiful vase, and sounds like a good deal, many congratulations to you !
Karen, I never actively sought one but when it presented itself I couldn't resist. I know I won't regret it! May you find one too......
PhilDMorris Thank you for sharing your knowledge about this design and of other background colours I've never seen. It's also nice to know that patt. no. 1071 is fairly rare, and perhaps even more so without the gilding.
I can well imagine just how amazing several together must be!
