Do you suppose this could be a dug artifact??

hi manikin that are worm holes in wood in deed and dear postcardcollector it might be a dug artifact but I'm not sure... wouldn't it have lost all the paint then? i might go and ask a museum?

He is amazing carved wood covered in gesso then painted the worm holes in wood and all that I see would not say he is a reproduction but the real thing maybe 1800's ? He was apparently stored some place damp . I would say taking him to a museum were they could hold him and exam might help authentic his age . Keep us posted what you find out ok .

If it was found with the wood box--it is the same odd color hue as used on the statue highlights, mouth and loin cloth.--which makes me think this was all put together at the same time==How is the statue affixed to the box? This may help solve some the mystery.

PPC I guess that is good question but poster says box was newer so we have to see if it was built for him or not . I know people can do might amazing work to make something look antique and it isn't that is why it need to be held by someone and inspected more close than a photo ?

Yes, a lot of things here would benefit from that.

Please be sure....this is not a fake.... the figurine is quite old...200years for Sure, but should be even older.... the box it stands on is new... i will visit the univerity for conservation and restoration this week... they should be able go tell me more... bought a trunk from circa 1740 there as well... and another trunk from circa 1620....

I agree with you as you see it looks authentic to me and it would be easy to make a case in same color I make wood doll bases for antique manikins because originals are often missing so not uncommon to add a new base . We will all be anxious to see what you find out. It is hard to replicate worm holes in wood and make it look that old like yours so hoping it is the real thing ! :-) can you see how lower legs end ? Did they break off or never any there ?

He is fantastic! And antique for sure.
His kneeling posture is rather unusual, no?
The stand is a tasteful work too :-)

It's a piece from the 13th to 14th century.... older than thought
