This is a carved Art Deco 32 inch marble sculpture of Cupid; standing with his bow at his feet and his quiver at his side; a floral garland draped across his torso; signed to verso, reading J. Cormier.
I was bidding on this piece which I had only just observed in my daily search. It was actually going up in a matter of minutes so I had little time to plan its acquisition. I got somewhat busy during the bidding deciding whether to keep bidding or to quit.
I DID NOT GET THE PIECE as I did not keep bidding after a certain amount. So I missed a piece by one of the most important Art Deco artists of all time. The only thing I was thinking at the time was that it might be too heavy for the marble topped table that I wanted to put it on. Actually it should have been o.k. with the weight. Joe Cormier pieces are rare and much sought after, and I had never seen this statue before. Even more rare than a chryselypantine statue, he seemed to do very few statues made entirely of marble. I had never seen this gorgeous piece before. I believe it was advertised as a 19th century sculpture but I believe it is around 1925, as all his work looks around the deco period. This one especially looks 1925 from the stylization of cupids hair and the flower garland.
This statue was last in the collection of an actor who worked with John Wayne, in the movie Commancheros I believe.

Does the SNIPE site still exist??, (where you can trump the high bid, unknown to the auction itself.)--You tell your highest bid and in the last second it automatically overbids the high. It is called a "SNIPE" bid--and that might also be the name of the site to work with. Only for online auctions like eBay, etc.
Yes Lois, it is "powersnipe" for ebay auctions...
I have used Auctionsniper .com for years and it has never failed me :-) Had not heard of powersnipe .
I know the disappointment of not getting something you regret but I always think a better piece and price will come along someday. Keep up the daily search ! xo

This is one of those times I go back and read the comments after I have commented and I have a statement and some questions... ;)
It's funny that I see it now, but I said the same thing kyra said-yes, great minds think alike i suppose! Now as for pinterest. I too used to get so annoyed with it because it seemed to always get in the way of my research but just recently I have also noticed a change. One being the fact that if you do choose to look there for a minute, it's no longer something someone has put there a year or more ago, so it seems that have finally filtered that maybe google did that thru images. Anyway, I don't understand kyras comment that you need to add the word pinterest in order to avoid it??? Am I missing something there or read it wrong??? Thanks Phil.
Share, for avoiding pinterest results in your searches, add the minus sign close to pinterest after your keywords! As this:

I missed some pieces I regret not being crazy enough to keep bidding on. Now I follow a quote you once wrote: "Buy, then think how you'll pay for it".
I do not use snipe as 90% or higher of auctions that I bid at are NOT EBAY. This snipe seems to be suited for ebay only.
Thanks mcheconi, good friend, for the comment. I could have kept bidding live as it was not ebay and snipe is only good for ebay it seems. I made a mistake and now must live with the consequences, and the chances of seeing this piece come up for auction again are pretty much nil. Oh well, will move on !~

grew up with a kid across the road from me named Danny Cormier when i was a boy used to play cards in his basement for smokes ...lol cool post to bad it got away... but they say things happen for a reason in our life's .....but who the hell are they ...lol later.
