This was an impulse buy on my part...not sure why I thought I needed TWO of these large vases, but they are gorgeous.

These vases are ca. 1899 in the Loetz PN 8025. Ricke's production notes indicates it was made in "rubin mattiris IV/714". They have a fantastic purple and blue iridescence and 4 clear applied handles. They are 9.75 inches tall and have polished pontils.

The DEK appears to be a type of stylized Campion flower and leaves in gold enamel. Campion is a humble, weedy plant with a small balloon receptacle beneath an inconspicuous flower. As a child, I recall picking the flowers with my friends and striking the balloon to my wrist to make a popping sound.

Ahhh, the days before handheld devices!

Fantastic piece Sammyz. I love the way the colours move with the shape (itself unusual to me) and the finishing touch; 4 sensuous handles.

Thanks racer4four! The color is deeply saturated and changes with the light. Although it appears to be purple, when you hold the vase up to the light and look through it to the pontil, it is actually a deep ruby red.

What a beautiful example! I just added it to the site and made it the thumbnail for the DEK IV/714 section. Congratulations on adding such a nice piece to your collection.

Thanks Deb. I was going to ask if you could use the photo for the description. I love the purples of rubin mattiris and wish I could take photos like famattas!
