i found this at my favorite 2nd hand store today. i don't know what it's called but it's a standing desk. i'm going to use it at the nursery as soon as we have our new workspace built [next wk?!]. all the wood in this has been hand planed. the nails are all square and rosehead. and the paint appears to be original. there's an interesting piece along the backside - along the middle where the trim is on the sides. i've never seen that before and am not quite sure what it's for. i don't know whether the hinges are new or not, but the lock sure does. wish i had that key though!

can anyone tell me anything about this desk? what they were for? when it was made? what is the style/period? etc... thank you!

i'd love for some of the folks who really know old american furniture to have a look at this one.

i just switched out a photo to show the interior pockets. i think that everything is original on this piece - which is pretty unusual.

thanks jscotto. the construction reminds me most of 18th century desks i've seen online, so i'm going to go w/ that unless someone can point out why not.

what are the lower rails called? those are very unusual on this piece. they show a lot of wear, but they appear to be original.
